Proper tattoo coverage

Richtige Tattoo-Abdeckung

A tattoo is a work of art on the skin. During the tattooing process, needles repeatedly pierce the upper layers of skin so that the ink is fixed in the dermis. After this controlled injury, the skin immediately begins the healing process – and this is precisely where the right tattoo cover plays a crucial role in protection, healing, and color retention.

From a medical perspective, a fresh tattoo is considered an open wound. It requires careful aftercare. One of the most important aspects of this aftercare is the correct selection and application of a protective cover. A correctly applied cover supports healing, protects color intensity, reduces the risk of infection, and prevents the ink from bleeding – a quality standard expected in a professional tattoo studio in Innsbruck.

Incorrect application or outdated, unscientific methods, on the other hand, can seriously damage the tattoo and the skin.

At Flight of Ink Studio Innsbruck, aftercare is an integral part of the quality of our work.

In this article, I explain the correct application of Tattoo Trim and Saniderm and share essential aftercare tips.

Why does a tattoo need a protective covering?

After getting a tattoo, many microscopic punctures are made in the skin. Plasma and wound fluid leak out. At the same time, the skin reacts with local inflammation and increased sensitivity to germs.

Without protection, the following problems can occur:

  • Bacteria can easily enter the wound.
  • The risk of infection increases.
  • The tattoo ink can bleed or fade.
  • The healing process takes longer and becomes more painful.

A suitable covering forms a protective barrier. It protects against external influences and allows the skin to breathe in a controlled manner.

What is Saniderm and why is it recommended?

Saniderm is a sterile, medical-grade, transparent, and flexible protective film. It is used for superficial wounds and tattoos.

Saniderm:

  • Prevents germs from entering the skin
  • Reduces friction from clothing
  • Regulates moisture
  • Promotes better color retention

Unlike conventional foil, Saniderm does not block the skin’s ability to breathe. It creates a balanced healing environment.

Our experience at Flight of Ink Studio Innsbruck shows that, when applied correctly, lines remain clearer and the skin heals more evenly.

When should Saniderm be removed?

Many customers ask this question.

The recommended wearing time is 5 to 7 days, provided that no large amount of fluid accumulates under the film. During this time, the skin can safely complete the initial healing phase.

However, if a large amount of plasma, wound exudate, or ink accumulates under the film, Saniderm must be removed immediately because:

  • the skin can no longer be properly ventilated
  • an excessively moist environment promotes bacterial growth
  • inflammation and infection become more likely
  • more ink leaks out, and the quality suffers

Note: A large amount of fluid under the film is not a good sign, but a warning signal.

How to remove Saniderm correctly

Incorrect removal can damage the protective layer of skin and pull out the ink. Therefore, the technique is crucial:

  • Never pull Saniderm off abruptly.
  • Loosen the edges slowly and millimeter by millimeter.
  • Pull the film parallel to the skin, not upwards.
  • A smooth, slow pull makes removal easier.
  • If the film is stuck tightly, briefly hold it under lukewarm water.

The goal is gentle removal without stretching the skin and without damaging the tattoo.

Why classic cling film is harmful

Standard cling film is considered outdated from a hygienic and medical perspective, but unfortunately, it is still in use.

Disadvantages:

  • Excessive perspiration
  • No air circulation
  • Extremely humid environment
  • Significantly increased risk of infection
  • High risk of color fading

Exception: For very short periods, such as the journey home from the studio, cling film is acceptable. It is not suitable for long-term coverage.

What is Tattoo Trim and why is it recommended?

Tattoo Trim is a modern method of initial tattoo care. It uses transparent, thin, self-adhesive protective films.

This method acts like a “second skin.” It protects the tattoo during the most sensitive first hours and days.

Tattoo Trim:

  • is sterile and waterproof
  • prevents germs from entering the tattoo
  • reduces friction from clothing
  • allows excess heat and steam to escape

This creates a controlled healing environment.

Tattoo Trim Application

After returning home, the following steps should be taken:

  • Remove the initial dressing promptly.
  • Clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and pH-neutral, unscented soap.
  • Do not use sponges or washcloths.
  • Use only clean hands and gentle movements.
  • Wash until no plasma, wound exudate, or smoothness remains.
  • Carefully dry the tattoo with clean paper towels.
  • Do not use a towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of Bepanthen.

First night

  • The cover must fit snugly.
  • No air should be trapped.
  • Secure with tape, but do not constrict.

Days 1 and 2

  • Wash, dry, moisturize, and reapply the cover in the morning.
  • Repeat every 4 hours.
  • Remove jewelry before applying the treatment.
  • Always use clean hands.
  • Ensure no air remains under the cover.

From Day 3

  • Wash: Twice daily, later once daily
  • Once no more discharge is present and the cover remains clean, it can be removed.

At Flight of Ink Studio Innsbruck, we used Tattoo Trim for initial care of a linework tattoo on the forearm. After a few hours, some plasma collected under the film—a sign of the natural healing process.

Tattoo Trim is excellent for short-term protection when properly cared for and changed.

Important Tattoo Aftercare – Dos & Don’ts

  • A fresh tattoo is an open wound.
  • Never tear off clothing or bandages that are stuck to the tattoo while dry.
  • Remove them slowly under lukewarm water.
  • Do not use excessive amounts of ointment.
  • Too much oil blocks the skin’s ability to breathe.
  • Do not touch the tattoo with unwashed hands.
  • The “dry feeling” phase is important.
  • Apply a thin layer of aftercare cream when the skin feels dry.
